Apollo Music Projects transforms the lives of children through music. We do this in three ways:
By working closely with the children in interactive workshops including a wide range of live music and active participation
by helping children to develop self-confidence and improve concentration
and by giving children the chance to experience high-quality performances in the classroom and concert hall.
The programme takes the form of a residency in each school. Over two terms, the musicians gradually introduce the different members of the orchestra, starting with small groups including a string quartet, brass ensemble and woodwind quartet. At the halfway point of the programme, there is a series of chamber orchestra workshops, each attended by three or four schools. This is a chance for the children to engage in music on a larger scale, to meet musicians up close and to learn about the ways in which the different instruments of the orchestra interact and join together to make music. The programme concludes with a spectacular symphony orchestra concert featuring large-scale orchestral works using the full range of instruments.
This year we have worked with 1100 children from 26 primary schools and one special secondary school in Hackney, Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Camden. The programme includes classroom sessions, orchestral workshops at Shoreditch Town Hall, Regent’s Hall, Great Hall, Leyton and The Dream Centre, Tottenham, and symphony orchestra concerts at Hackney Empire. Our enthusiasm and vision are based on the passion of our team of musicians to inspire through education, reinforced by the joyful response we get from the children.
“David and the AMP orchestra deliver music at the highest standard, beautifully played and imaginatively presented and at no time talking down to the children. Lucky kids who get to experience their work: if only it could be open to more people…“ Sir Simon Rattle
